Jakub the Gardener

Construction1988

In the landscaped recreation area between the Rovniny housing estate and the cultural centre, a cheerful realist sculpture of a small boy with a spraying hose was installed in 1988 on a teardrop-shaped island, in collaboration with architect Mojmír Sonnek. The work is by Jiří Klíma (b. 1956) of Opava, a graduate of the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, who also created the sculptural decoration of the Church of Christ the Good Shepherd in Hněvošice. The inspiration for the sculpture was the artist’s son Jakub, playing with a hose in the garden. Jakub’s name was originally engraved on the left side of the figure’s head, which soon became popularly known as “the little firefighter”.
