Rain was created by sculptor Robert Buček (b. 1979), a native of Uherské Hradiště and a graduate in sculpture from the University of Ostrava. It is the first post-revolution sculpture designed for a public space in Hlučín, selected in a competition held in 2015. Buček captured the fleeting instant when a raindrop strikes the surface of water. The work also reflects the history of the region. The water’s smooth surface, symbolising the fate of the Hlučín area, is disturbed and unsettled by something descending from above – something that cannot be undone. Rain, beyond all command, becomes a symbolic bearer of loss, disillusion, and unrest tied to Hlučín’s past, rippling and breaking the surface. At the same time, it expresses renewal and resurgence: from the falling drop another is born in reverse, rising not from the sky but from the water itself – from the surface of Hlučín. As a raindrop’s fall sets the water trembling, so the fall of historical events has stirred the destinies of individuals and of society as a whole. The original sculpture, made of artificial stone based on polyester resin, soon developed cracks and was therefore re-created in sandstone.
